The International Association of Legal Administrators (ALA) has announced that the Raleigh Durham Chapter has been awarded the 2018 Presidents' Award of Excellence.  This marks the eight consecutive year the Chapter has achieved this distinction recognizing its excellence in providing benefit to its members.

Named in honor of the Associations' Past Presidents, ALA annually recognizes those ALA Chapters that merit this distinction by having demonstrated a high level of Chapter leadership, education quality, member engagement, and community involvement.  The award will be presented to then-Chapter President Lynn Hooper at the ALA Annual Conference in National Harbor, MD on May 4, 2018 during the Association Lunch awards ceremony.

Congratulations to our Chapter President, Anne Webster, our Chapter Board and Committee members who have worked so diligently to provide the truly excellent experience that our members and Business Partners enjoy.  This award is a validation of your effort and success.

Members, Business Partners, and guests recently enjoyed the biannual Raleigh-Durham Chapter Education Conference, hosted at the NC State Bar on March 13.  The conference provided a variety of topics and presentations focused on helping legal management professionals in "Conquering the Chaos" of human interaction that we face every day.

From majestic leadership to merry laughter, mindfulness to minding ethics, regulatory trends to fellowship with friends, the day was filled with enlightening and encouraging content coupled with practical techniques for us to employ in directing the human capital in our organizations.

Of course, no successful gathering of the RDU Chapter is complete without a time of lively social interaction.  This event did not disappoint, with a Chapter Social hosted at The Bridge Club, which included a special ALA version of Game of Games that pulled in teams of attendees in a competition of linguistic acuity (you had to be there!).  The interaction of Chapter Members with our supportive Business Partners over gourmet refreshments and goofy recreation provided a fitting wrap to the day.

A big thank you to Joe Cerone, Education Conference Chair, and the many diligent and thoughtful committee members that made this day an elevating experience for all in attendance.

The Raleigh-Durham Chapter hosted its annual Holiday Breakfast – sponsored by LexisNexis - at Sullivan’s on December 6th.

A scrumptious breakfast of steak and eggs was preceded by a time of fellowship with colleagues,

as well as an intriguing Christmas game challenging all to identify their peers from childhood Christmas photos.

    Many cute ones were displayed!

The holiday spirit of giving was in abundant display, as collectively the Chapter members and business partners donated over $800 in gift cards to support the work of Haven House ministries in our community

This generosity, coupled with the general laughter and conversation, evidenced the unique professional community fostered in the Raleigh-Durham ALA Chapter.  We wish everyone a very blessed and safe Holiday Season!

Gary T. Swisher, President of the International Association of Legal Administrators, announced the 2018-2019 ALA Board of Directors and Regional Leadership Teams this week.  Joining the Board of Directors is Brian Gilman, CLM, of our Raleigh-Durham Chapter, who will begin a three year term as an At Large Director beginning at the Annual Conference in National Harbor, MD in May 2018.  Brian, a former Chapter President and Board Member, has been an active member and leader in the RDU Chapter for many years, and also volunteers his time in serving the NCBA and various industry and non-profit Boards.  He will be completing a two-year term as a Region 2 Representative for ALA at the time he takes his position on the Board of Directors.

Brian will serve with our newly appointed Region 2 Director, Geoffrey Williams, CLM, who was selected to serve out the ALA Board term vacated by the resignation of Vick Smith-Bilt  in October, which term runs through April, 2019.

Brian will be handing over the reigns of his Regional Representative role to fellow RDU Chapter member Sandra Corcoran, who was selected to become a member of the Region 2 Leadership Team, also effective as of the May 2018 Annual Conference.  Sandra also formerly served as the RDU Chapter President and Board member, and has acted in various Chapter leadership roles for many years.  Sandra will join Karen Beasley of the Suncoast Chapter as the 2018 incoming Region 2 Representatives, and during her two-year term will engage with local ALA Chapters like ours around Region 2 to assist in creating a successful Chapter experience for their members.

Both Sandra and Brian went through an extensive application and due diligence process, and were selected by the Regional Nominating Committee and Association Nominating Committee, respectively, for these positions from a pool "of talented and well-qualified individuals" from across the Association, per Swisher.

Please join the Raleigh-Durham Chapter in proudly congratulating our very own on their well-deserved selection to these leadership roles.

    Well done, Sandra and Brian!

On Tuesday October 17th, the Raleigh-Durham Chapter of ALA hosted it's annual Fall Social - a time for fellow legal Managers and Chapter Business Partners to "unwine" and enjoy a time of networking and fellowship at Chatham Hill Winery.  Beyond sampling delightful wines with creative food pairings, the Chapter had a paring of its own in mind - to combine this gathering with a demonstration of support for our Community.

For 2017, the Chapter elected to focus the event in support of the Legal Aid of North Carolina.  Through the generosity of both Members and Business Partners, nearly $1,000 was raised in financial contributions to support the work of Legal Aid in providing free legal services in civil matters to low-income people in order to ensure equal access to justice and to remove legal barriers to economic opportunity.  The Raleigh-Durham Chapter is proud to be able to assist in furthering their mission.

On July 26th, The Raleigh Durham Chapter once again demonstrated its knack for creating truly "special" events.  Special guest speaker, Bill Wooditch, author of Always Forward, brought a motivating message of the importance of perseverance and positive attitude in fostering personal success - in business and in life.

The Chapter was also pleased to welcome ALA Region 2 Representative Mark Tallent as another special guest, and enjoyed the opportunity to interact with Mark and learn more about the direction and value of ALA.

An elegant time of networking and reception followed at Raleigh's 10th Rooftop Terrace.  The beautiful evening and mix of members and Business Partners made for a truly special evening.  Thanks to our Chapter leadership for all of their work in providing such great opportunities to our members.

At least one aspect of lawyer advertising under North Carolina State Bar ethics rules is being considered for change.  A newly proposed ethics opinion, Proposed 2017 FEO 3, would permit use of only a lawyer's website URL in advertisements in satisfaction of the current Rule 7.2(c) requirement.  To read more details, please follow the below link to the article by the Brocker Law Firm.

Reflective of her enthusiasm, involvement, and service as a new member of the Raleigh Durham Chapter of ALA, Meredith Homlotis was one of eight ALA International members nominated for the 2017 ALA Quest award. The Quest Award recognizes a new member who is involved in a number of Association activities and demonstrates conviction, dedication and relentless pursuit of personal and professional excellence. Chapter Presidents are given the opportunity to nominate one eligible member from a list provided by ALA.

At the recent ALA 2017 Annual Conference and Expo in Denver, Meredith was recognized on stage in front of the over 1,000 conference attendees as a finalist.  While Meredith was not the recipient of this year's ALA Quest award, her selection as a finalist affirms her passionate commitment and service to our Chapter, and her pursuit of development as a legal management professional.

Meredith is a winner to all of us who know and serve with her, and the Raleigh-Durham Chapter is PROUD!!
